First Period

The opening period saw both teams locked in a defensive battle, with neither side managing to find the back of the net. The Oilers displayed strong defensive play, blocking 21 shots and maintaining pressure on their opponents. However, they struggled offensively with only 18 shots on goal throughout the game.

Second Period

In the second period, Leon Draisaitl broke through for Edmonton with a goal that momentarily put them ahead. Yet, this lead was short-lived as Detroit responded swiftly with three goals of their own. Despite Stuart Skinner's efforts in goal for Edmonton—making 20 saves—the Red Wings capitalized on their opportunities to take control.

Third Period

Entering the final period trailing by two goals, Brett Kulak provided some hope for Edmonton by assisting on another tally that narrowed the gap. However, an empty-netter from Detroit sealed their victory late in regulation time.

The Oilers' performance highlighted areas needing improvement; notably winning only 44 percent of faceoffs and committing numerous giveaways which contributed significantly towards what went wrong for Edmonton Oilers during this matchup against an efficient Winged Wheel squad who won more faceoffs at crucial moments (56 percent).
